What is BACLS?

The British Association for Contemporary Literary Studies supports the study, research and teaching of contemporary literature, in English, modern languages and other fields. This area is increasingly popular and yet, unlike other fields, has had no scholarly organisation in the UK.

Who is BACLS for?

Faculty, early career academics, graduate students, teachers and any others working in contemporary literature, or cognate fields, in English or other languages.

Why should I join?

On behalf of our members, BACLS will:

  • Promote and advance work in contemporary literature, criticism and theory
  • Provide forums for sharing research and exploring pedagogy
  • Develop research and funding links and networks
  • Foster links between contemporary writers, academics, secondary level educators, and graduate students and bring together a diverse and strong community
  • Support graduate students and early career researchers
  • Develop contemporary scholarly agendas
  • Foster inclusivity and diversity

In addition to these scholarly networks and links, membership benefits include:

  • A regular BACLS newsletter
  • Access to the BACLS Members’ Area
  • Access to the biennial BACLS: What Happens Now conference, as well as other BACLS-affiliated events throughout the year
  • Access to Conference Attendance Bursaries
  • Entrance to the BACLS Prizes, commencing 2018 and including: the Postgraduate Essay Prize; the Book Prize for a Monograph; the Book Prize for an Edited Collection
  • BACLS also supports C21: Journal of 21st-Century Writings, a peer-reviewed and established journal in the field, as well as Alluvium, its graduate-run “short-form” journal of contemporary literary studies
